Online instructor Kate Milliken has won the prestigious John Simmons Short Fiction Award for her story collection If I’d Known You Were Coming (University Of Iowa Press, October 2013). Before teaching for the Writers’ Program, Kate was a Wp’ student, went on to pursue her MFA, began teaching for us, and became a student again.

“I have had the great pleasure of teaching some of the same courses that got me started, continuing to build on the community that was my foundation. One of the greatest benefits of teaching for the Writers’ Program is that I can still be a student. In 2008 I enrolled in an Advanced Fiction Workshop with David Borofka. During that course I wrote two new stories, made a handful of new writing friends, and found myself only one story away from what would become my debut collection. I am so grateful to the Writers’ Program for its wealth of courses, its extraordinary community of working writers, and for the opportunity to give back some of what it has given to me.”

Kate will be teaching Getting Started (Online) in winter quarter. Visit her website katemilliken.com for upcoming reading events.
