Certificate Programs

The UCLA Extension Writers’ Program offers certificate programs for those students who prefer a structured course of study. Writers’ Program certificate programs are designed to provide perspective, knowledge, and training in several dynamic writing fields. The breadth and depth of the coordinated, sequential offerings allow you to define and pursue career goals, select courses keyed to your interests, discover or develop your potential for professional growth, and acquire necessary skills.

All of these certificate programs may be completed fully online at a duration of one to two years depending on if courses are taken on a full-time or part-time basis.

Please note that the Screenwriting: Film and TV Comprehensive Certificate is qualified for an F-1 Visa Status, but the majority of courses must be completed in person. Please refer to the International Student Office for more details at iso@uclaextension.edu or by calling (800) 825-9351. You may also visit their website for more information, http://international.uclaextension.edu/

A grade of “C”or better must be earned in all courses in order to fulfill requirements. Courses may be taken either onsite or online. The benefits of a certificate from the Writers’ Program include advance notice of upcoming courses, a free one-on-one script consultation or a 100-page manuscript consultation, preferential treatment on wait lists, a Bruin Card, and participation in an Extension-wide graduation ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall upon completion of all requirements.  In addition, Writers’ Program certificate students are enrolled in the UCLA Alumni Association at no charge.

Students who complete a Writers’ Program Certificate in Creative Writing, Feature Film Writing, Television Writing, or Screenwriting: Film and TV Comprehensive can receive Advanced Standing in Antioch University Los Angeles’s MFA program in creative writing (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and writing for young people), or Antioch University Santa Barbara’s MFA program in TV/screenwriting, playwriting, or emerging and new media.

Advanced Standing allows a student to enter the MFA program with the equivalent of one semester completed. Students complete three semesters of study at Antioch instead of the usual four semesters required of students without advanced standing, offering a cost savings on their Antioch tuition of nearly $9,000 for LA and nearly $10,000 for Santa Barbara.

In addition, all Writers’ Program Certificate holders will be eligible for Antioch’s fellowships and scholarships.

Eligible students should indicate in their Admissions Dialogue Essay that they have completed or will have completed a UCLA Extension Writers’ Program Certificate by the time they begin study at Antioch University.

Certificate completion does not guarantee admission to Antioch University’s MFA programs. All admissions decisions are made solely by Antioch University MFA program faculty, and questions about the process should be directed to them.

Whether you’re interested in writing for young readers, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, learning specific skills towards story development, or techniques in story structure, this program allows you to earn a certificate while specializing in the path of your choosing.

The Certificate in Creative Writing is an immersive program for developing individual writing skills. Students generate and polish work based on their individual goals. The program offers the opportunity to specialize in genres like poetry, short stories, novel writing, essay writing, memoir writing, or to explore writing across genres, hybrid genres, and new forms without the limitation of prescribed curriculum.

The Certificate in Creative Writing is fully customizable. The program honors each individual student’s journey and goals, allowing students to pursue the coursework that is most meaningful both to their specific writing goals and their level of expertise.

Students have access to personalized advising that helps them chart their path.

Students may follow a Writers’ Program sample Curriculum Plan based on specific writing goals to conceptualize their own program of study. This curriculum plan may be completed as their whole course of study or customized based on their own interests.

The only required course, the Creative Capstone, allows students to compile their writing from prior coursework into a final portfolio representing the finest examples of their work. The Capstone course helps further refine work in this portfolio while also completing a reflective essay/artistic statement that synthesizes their learning in the program and establishes their artistic vision for future work. The Capstone helps outline their next goals, whether it be new projects, publication, applying to MFA programs, or other career development activities.

These sequences can be taken to help achieve a specific goal.
