My screenwriting teaching philosophy stems from my movie watching experience: most movies stink not because they’re badly structured, but because they’re boring. Audiences respond to passion, so I try not to get between students and the germinal inspiration of their stories. Because nobody ever walked out of a movie theater and said, “Wow, what a great movie! The inciting incident in act one was perfectly placed!” Well, nobody except another screenwriting instructor. I try to guide my students with feedback that help them tell their stories more effectively and communicate the passion they’ll need to make their screenplays stand out from the formulaic majority.
