“Rendition,” a new film by UCLA Extension alum and Academy Award winner Gavin Hood, previewed on campus earlier this week to a captivated audience of 300 people. The film explores the global effect of the anti-terrorism law called “extraordinary rendition” in which terrorism suspects are shipped to off-shore sites where anti-torture interrogation laws do not apply. The film follows the efforts of an American wife trying to locate the whereabouts of her Arab husband after he is accused of aiding terrorists.
In 1991, Hood began the Certificate Program in Film, Television & Video offered by the Entertainment Studies department. In 1992, Hood placed 3rd in the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program annual Screenplay Competition for his script “A Reasonable Man.” In 1999, Variety put him on their “Top Ten Directors to Watch” list, and he went on to collect an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film for “Tsotsi” in 2006.
In an article in the UCLA Daily Bruin, Hood revealed a secret of his success. “To study rigorously with great teachers and students from all over the world really set me apart.”

What sets “Rendition” apart, besides the cast of A-list actors including Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal and Meryl Streep, is the hot-button issues of national security and the war on terror. Rendition opens Oct 19. Full article in the Daily Bruin.
