Creative writing student Catherine Reed Templeton‘s poem, “By the Barbed Wire Fence” won first prize in the poetry category at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. The poem is about two girls in Israel and the juxtaposition of childhood, growing up, and war. Catherine took Introduction to Fiction and Writing the Short Story: A Limited Enrollment Workshop with Instructor of the Year in onsite creative writing, Eve La Salle Caram. “Eve was an amazing instructor,” Catherine says. “She’s given me not only the confidence to follow my own voice but also invaluable information to deal with the craft of writing. She will always hold a special place in my heart as I go follow my dreams of writing.”
