Funnywoman, memoirist, and former student Hilary Carlip has a new book out: À la Cart: The Secret Lives of Grocery Shoppers. The book features stories and photographs of twenty-six unforgettable individuals who vary in age, gender, ethnicity—even facial hairstyles—but have one thing in common: they are all Hillary Carlip. A cross between Lily Tomlin and Tracey Ullman—with Cindy Sherman’s eye—Hillary has brilliantly imagined, and then become, these twenty-six people after stumbling upon one of the most intimate and revealing documents they’ve left behind—their shopping lists. Hilary has taken such creative writing courses as The Art of the Personal Essay with instructor Amy Friedman. She wrote her first personal essay in Amy’s class and then went on to publish the memoir Queen of the Oddballs with Harper Collins.
