Lisa Atkinson, who has taken Writers’ Program classes since 2000, saw her work published and recognized in 2008. In May, Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine published her poem “Papercuts,” and in the same month Lisa won First Prize (Humorous) and Honorable Mention (Rhyming) in the 35th Annual Mississippi Valley Poetry Contest!

Lisa has taken seven creative writing and screenwriting courses in the Writers’ Program.

“Thanks to UCLA Extension’s writing teachers, I developed the skills and confidence necessary to get published. Not only did they teach me all the tricks in the book, they gave me the most useful gift: the conviction that with study, students really can break into print — and even win some awards.”
