Student Michael Shokrian, who took several classes with the Writers’ Program in 2008 including The Art of the Short Story, Writing Funnier Funny Essays, and Workshop in Fiction Writing, is the winner of the 2008 American Literary Review Short Fiction Contest for his story “Asphalt.” Michael submitted the story, about a village boy trying to find answers to the eternal questions of life, to many literary magazines before stumbling on the ALR contest.

“All of my Writers’ Program classes were great because they got me back into writing, thinking about writing, getting back into a routine.”
