Kelly Hickey, a student in Amy Friedman‘s Personal Essay class, recently published her humorous essay, Day 51, on More.com. Kelly wrote the piece on the 51st day of her unemployment after taking a trip to her local Employment Development Department.

“I took Personal Essay in the fall of 2009. I came away from the class with the revelation that our personal stories are more than just entertaining anecdotes or cautionary tales; they are blueprints of our perceptions and how we wish to be perceived. The safe and supportive environment created by our instructor, Amy Friedman, inspired us to explore and share our stories in class and in the public forum. By the end of the term, our class had so much creative momentum that several other students and I organized a writing group that is still inspired and active.”

Congratulations to Kelly, and her writing group, for keeping up the momentum!
