Longtime student, Anna Alves, has two great pieces of news to share: acceptance into an MFA program and a recent publication! Anna, a former PEN Rosenthal Emerging Voices Fellow, will be studying creative writing at Rutgers University, and her story, “The Loves of Marcado Mercado,” will be published in the fall issue of Kartika Review.

The story is a magic realism flash fiction piece about a pair of male twins born in the Philippines—one born with two hearts and the other born with none. She began writing it in Maria Amparo Escandon‘s weekend magic realism class and says, “Maria was not only a fun and enlightening instructor, but her class had me play in a genre I had never tried out before.”

Anna also studied with online instructor, David Borofka, and says, “David is one of the most rigorous writing instructors I’ve ever had. He was illuminating. He truly cares about creative writing as both a discipline and as community.”

Best of luck with your MFA, Anna, and continued publishing success!
