Perhaps you’ve taken a creative writing course or two, gotten the confidence to pursue your dream of being published, but you know you need to take more courses to continue to refine your craft. Have you considered adding a bit of structure to your coursework by enrolling in one of our two certificate programs (emphasis in fiction or emphasis in creative nonfiction)?

For a $200 candidacy fee (good for three years, then renewable at $50 per year) you can join a proud group dedicated to taking approximately 12 courses. And an added perk: courses can be taken onsite, online, or both, and the Wp’ counts any course you’ve taken up to a year before enrolling in the program, provided you received a “C” or better.

Here are the specific benefits of the program:

Advance notice of upcoming courses

Certificate students are able to enroll in courses a full week before the general public. Each quarter, certificate students receive a special “sneak peak” email letting them know what will be on offer in the upcoming quarter. In practice, this also means that our advisors are able to focus solely on the needs of our certificate students for a full week.

Free one-on-one manuscript consultation

This is a biggie. Upon completion of their certificates, students have up to one year to submit a manuscript of up to 300 pages for a professional manuscript consultation by one of our instructors, free of charge (a $2100 value). Click here for more information about this service.

As a recent certificate graduate said of her manuscript consultation, “I feel as though I have a much better grasp on my story and characters. The instructor also encouraged me to keep writing — to finish my novel and make it the best I can. I truly appreciate his thorough line-by-line notes as well as the additional notes he gave me regarding each scene/chapter.”

Gold-seal certificate upon completion of all requirements.

That’s right, a seal made of gold. Or, more accurately, the color gold, like the tickets in Willy Wonka’s chocolate bars. Either way, something to frame or hang on your refrigerator.

New! UCLA Extension CareerSpot

Current certificate students and graduates can now access the BruinView Job Board which posts hundreds of current nationwide jobs. An online resume critique service and one-on-one counseling is also available.

Certificate graduates are honored in an annual ceremony on the UCLA campus.

This is a wonderful event for students and their families to get together to recognize this accomplishment. Plus, there is usually a commemorative gift for each graduate.
