Denise Emanuel Clemen, who has studied with numerous WP instructors, has published her memoir Birth Mother (Shebooks, July 2014). Like many of our students, her writing career has been nontraditional. “I began writing at the age of 49 in a casual writer’s group that took place in a coffee shop, “ Denise explains, “and quickly segued to UCLA Extension where I found Les Plesko, Mary Otis, Sam Dunn, and Barbara Abercrombie, among others. I worked on this book with Barbara and Sam, and honed my submission skills with Michelle Meyering. I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity for these wonderful workshops.”

She has also completed an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Nebraska low-residency program. “I would never have applied for an MFA program without taking Writers’ Program courses first,” Denise says.
