Coming on the heels of the recent introduction of our Certificate in Literary Representation, The Writers’ Program at UCLA Extension is thrilled to announce our Certificate in Editing and Publishing! The Certificate in Editing and Publishing and Certificate in Literary Representation are ideal next steps for MFA graduates and people who wish to transition to a creative career in the publishing industry.

Los Angeles is home to a thriving grassroots publishing community growing by leaps and bounds into a respected source of notable books. LA-affiliated publishers’ books were finalists for major awards like the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Though small compared to the publishing industry in New York, LA’s presses are quintessentially twenty-first century endeavors, carving out niches in a rapidly changing commercial ecosystem. Mission-driven publishing, passion projects, and new paradigms in how books are produced, marketed, and sold drive these nimble, socially connected, and community-minded businesses.

The Certificate in Editing and Publishing provides practical education and professional development for people who want to transition into a career in literary editing or publishing, serving in essential roles of the commercial aspect of creative writing. Students completing this program would be well-positioned for positions as editors in publishing or business, managing editors, copyeditors, and developmental editors.

Developed with advice and participation from representatives of successful local models, students receive a ground-up view of publishing, beginning with core editing skills and moving into high-level publishing business activities. They provide core editorial skill development and publishing industry knowledge with practical hands-on experiential opportunities through internships.

All courses can also be taken a la carte for professional development and are an asset to any professional looking to build upon their skills and learn more about the industry.

To earn the certificate, students must complete the required units and receive a grade of “C” or better in each course in order to fulfill requirements. Courses may be taken in the classroom and/or online. Students typically take one class a quarter, with an average completion time of a little over two years.
