As 2019 draws to a close, we reflect on what a year of change it’s been for the Writers’ Program. Since December of 2018 we’ve added three new staff members (while bidding a very fond farewell to staffer of eight years, Carla) – Ashley, Carrie, and Jennie – and are super excited at having this new, vibrant energy to infuse the program. We’re also currently blessed with three amazing work studies who have done an incredible amount of work since starting this fall.
Having finally settled into a workspace for the foreseeable future, we’re working to rebuild our student & instructor publication library (tell us about your success and send us books!), and find innovative ways of using spaces for events like Open Houses, New Student Orientation, and Certificate Resource Sessions.
Our annual events like the Writers Studio, Publication Party, and Writing Retreat at Lake Arrowhead continue to be successful and are leading to new events like the Progress Party, Young Adult Symposium, and staff writing retreats to keep our own creative works on track.
Next year, we’re planning on all of the above events, plus attending AWP in March, WonderCon in April, and more! Not to mention the continuation of our podcast, The Write Process, which will start production on season three very soon!
Additionally, we launched TWO new Certificate programs in Creative Writing this year: the Certificate in Literary Representation and the Editing & Publishing Certificate. We’ve also done a lot of research and focus groups on our other Creative Writing programs and there will likely be some changes coming to other Certificates soon.
As always, we love hearing about our students’ successes and fostering new writers with our scholarships, competitions, retreats, and events. We’re currently looking into new ways of developing a greater sense of community for our students and alumni and would love your input on ideas of how to do so within Los Angeles and worldwide.
Thank you to all our students, staff, supporters, and instructors for making the Writers’ Program a fantastic place to work and help people achieve their writing dreams. The Writers’ Program wishes you a safe and happy holiday season, and hopes 2020 brings with it more focus, productivity, and writing goals achieved!
