We all know that 2020 has been a year of unexpectedness, and a need to pivot, learn, and cope with new and different ways of life. On the heels of the official announcement that UCLA will continue with almost courses and activities online through the Winter 2021 quarter, the Writers’ Program officially announces an online version of our annual event – the Writers Studio: Home Edition.

Our Writers Studio has always been special – an intimate, collaborative, intensive learning experience for everyone involved. One downside is that as amazing as the experience is, it has previously only been available to those in the Los Angeles area, or those with the means to travel and pay for the experience. With Writers Studio: Home Edition, we have the opportunity to share this unique experience with a broader base of learners, and the accessibility to participate in the four-day intensive virtually, from just about anywhere (we’re still working on Pacific Time schedules, FYI) and for a reduced cost.

“At first we were disappointed we couldn’t invite people to campus for the Studio this year,” says Program Director Charles Jensen. “We know that feeling of being in the room together is so important to our writers. But once we committed to the virtual version for safety reasons, we saw a lot of potential. More guest speakers. Maybe a big special guest! Finding ways to use Zoom and Canvas and off-screen work time as effectively as possible. Now I think this is going to be such a special year, and one that allows us to include writers from across the world, none of whom have to travel all the way to LA to experience our outstanding instructors.”

There are many aspects of the Writers Studio that will remain the same, such as:

  • Intimate class sizes to ensure students & instructors are able to experience a quality learning environment
  • Opening and closing ‘receptions’ for students to interact and connect with one another
  • Live class time to learn, discuss, and workshop ideas and writing
  • Time to write and work on individual projects throughout the event
  • A virtual Studio office with Writers’ Program staff available throughout the weekend to answer questions, address concerns, and advise on our other courses, events, and program

Program Manager and event coordinator Nutschell, who is dedicated to making every Studio experience the best it can be, says, “While we will miss sharing coffee and bagels with our instructors and students, we will still provide them with all the support and encouragement they need to have a fun, and engaging four days through our virtual Studio Office. Students can pop in before or after their classes, and even during breaks, to ask questions or get advice from our program representatives. We encourage our students to drop by–we’re looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones in this virtual format.”

Additionally, there will be an opening keynote by a special guest, as well as guest speakers in each class every day – a bonus number of speakers from our in-person Studio. There are twelve unique courses on offer, varying from Creative Writing to Screenwriting to Editing & Publishing. And yes, Studio courses count toward Certificate requirements.

As a final benefit, Studio attendees will have access to exclusive participant digital badges and wallpapers, letting everyone know they are spending time in 2021 dedicated to their writing craft with an intimate cohort of fellow writers.

We’re confident that the Writers Studio: Home Edition will be a welcoming, engaging environment for past Studio attendees as well as a new cohort of folks who previously couldn’t attend due to distance/financial reasons. Also, members of WP NOW, our membership program for students, alumni, and all writers, can get 10% off the Studio.
