Barbara Abercrombie taught with the Writers’ Program for over thirty years. She was a dedicated instructor who devoted her energy, time, and wisdom to students – being awarded both the UCLA Extension Distinguished Instructor Award and the UCLA Extension Outstanding Instructor Award in Creative Writing. Even during her final months, Barbara was planning to teach a multi-quarter master class. She left an indelible mark on her students and colleagues – as we have previously highlighted.

While many Writers’ Program instructors, especially those who teach for many years, make impactful marks on students, staff, and fellow instructors, Barbara was a particularly special light that we will not forget. To that end, UCLA Extension and the Writers’ Program have instituted the Barbara Abercrombie Scholarship in Creative Writing.

This scholarship will carry Barbara’s legacy through supporting writers for years to come. Through the generosity of friends, colleagues, and the writing community at large, donations to this scholarship will support creative writers who may not have been able to experience Barbara’s exceptional teaching first hand, but will benefit from it for years to come.
