Writers’ Program student and 2009 PEN USA Emerging Voices Fellow in Poetry Mehnaz Turner recently had her first film noir inspired poem published in the online Cahoots Magazine. The poem, “How to Make Bombs,” was based on Pickup on South Street, a film she watched in Suzanne Lummis‘ class Poetry Goes to the Movies: The Poem Noir.

“I have taken poetry writing classes through the UCLA Writers’ Program with Suzanne Lummis and Laurel Ann Bogen. These amazing instructors pushed my work to a higher level through their specific feedback and revision strategies. Their passion for poetry is contagious, and their workshops offer a positive academic environment where craft questions are considered both practically and creatively. Through these inspirational classes, my voice developed in key ways.”

Mehnaz’s poems have also appeared or are forthcoming in The Journal of Pakistan Studies, The Pedestal Magazine, Desilit Magazine, and An Anthology of California Poets.
