Student Jamie Schaffner’s novel excerpt “Get the Girl,” a 2009 Kirkwood Award finalist, will be published in the forthcoming anthology Best Lesbian Romance (Cleis Press, Jan 2011). Jamie’s protagonist, Natalie, lives in a close knit Jewish community and struggles with keeping her cheerleader girlfriend a secret in early 1980s Portland.

Jamie, a certificate student in Creative Writing, has taken nearly 20 Writers’ Program courses over the years, and credits Les Plesko with helping her get her writing into shape:

“There is no way this work would be published without Les. He taught me to be a better writer, a more exacting editor and a discerning reader, while at the same time building my confidence.”

Congratulations, Jamie! Keep us posted as your work evolves.
