Onsite creative writing instructor Cecilia Manguerra Brainard‘s third collection of short stories, Vigan and Other Stories, is a Finalist of the 31st National Book Awards of the Philippines. Ceclia’s stories bridge time and place and center on a school girl, an older woman, a love-struck boy, a stolen child, and an underground revolutionary.

She shares this advice to students working on their own short stories:

“The writer needs to inhabit the mind of the character. This means the writer sees, hears, smells, feels, remembers, thinks like the character. Let your readers experience what the character is going through; or put another way, make readers experience the journey the character goes through.”

Congratulations, Ceclia! Keep us posted.
