Writers’ Program student Sandra Ramos O’Briant has won First Place for Best Historical Fiction and Best First Book at the 2013 International Latino Book Awards for her novel The Sandoval Sisters’ Secret of Old Blood. A work of historical fiction, Sandra’s novel takes place in Santa Fe during the Mexican-American War. Writing her novel was a journey that began at the Writers’ Program. “I wrote a line that appears in the novel 15 years ago in an Introduction to Fiction class. Many twists and new beginnings followed with the culmination being a mentorship with Claire Carmichael.”
