Kate Imy, a UCLA Extension screenwriting student, was recently selected to participate in the Outfest Screenwriting Lab (2022-2023) and the Writers Guild Foundation’s Veterans Writing Project (2023-2024). She got into both programs with a queer wartime romance feature, BLACK WATERS, inspired by her PhD in History and book Faithful Fighters (Stanford University Press), about Indian soldiers in the First World War. Most recently, BLACK WATERS advanced to the semifinals of the Austin Film Festival (final placement TBD).

On her time with the UCLA Extension screenwriting courses, Kate says that “Michael Barlow led me through two of my earliest, and most beneficial, feature courses by encouraging me to lean into my historical background to develop my voice as a screenwriter. Beverly Gray’s Rewrite course enabled me to revisit BLACK WATERS and pare down unnecessary detours to amplify the characters and bring the project to its fullest potential. Without these courses, my Lab experiences would not have been possible.”

Congratulations Kate! If you have a success story, we want to hear about it! Click here.
